Hey guys,
Time for another blog. I KNOW I said Friday but my weekend became kind of hectic and I wasn't able to. I'm sorry, but I'm here now and ready to continue our conversation...
My question to you guys before I left on Wednesday was what did it mean to be a woman in today's society and in my next one (being this blog) I would tell you my opinion on the subject. BterflyGrl responded that she thought that it was really hard because women are expected to wear so many hats in the home and also in the workforce. She also said that women have to work harder to get ahead; and I have to say that I am in agreement with her. Women are viewed as the weaker sex, even today in 2010. However, I must say that we have make significant strives in the past fifty years that shows that we are on our way towards equality...we just have a ways to go before it happens.
Being a woman in today's society is difficult for many reasons including, but not limited to, the ones that BterflyGrl mentioned. One of the big things I see these days, is the strive for perfection by a lot of women. A lot of this is due to what is portrayed in the media everyday. Images are constantly been shown of what the "perfect woman" supposedly looks like, when in reality not even those being portrayed look like the result. How are women supposed to happy with themselves when they are constantly being told that the way they look isn't right. Being told something like this repeatedly can happen damaging affects to women's self-esteem and lead to even more serious problems. This is why women and girls are continuing to starve themselves so that they can fit the mold of what they think that perfection is. But my question to you, is what you think should be done about this problem? There are steps that have been taken in the right direction. There is a bill in Congress that demands that magazines and ads disclose the fact that retouching has been done to the photos they are looking at. While, this will the problem it will not be enough. Young girls especially need to know that there is nothing wrong with the way that they look and that there is no such thing as the perfect woman (and before someone throws out the name Megan Fox, she has clubbed thumbs so perfection has eluded her as well lol). They need to be able to look in the mirror and not just see their flaws. I know it's human nature but this is only so because we have been conditioned to look for them.
I could go on for longer about this topic but unfortunately it's 2 in the morning and I have classes in the morning (*sigh). I'll make sure to cover this topic some more next time, which should be sometime this upcoming week. Look for another blog around Thursday? I think my next blog is going to venture into the realm of boys... Dun, dun, dun(Okay I know that was lame but I've always wanted a reason to use that expression. :-) ).
